Chapters 13-15
Perspective: Scout
Aunt Alexandra just showed up at our front door. I don't like Aunt Alexandra to start out with and now she expects to knock on my door and teach me how to be a lady. She says that me and Jem disgrace our family name and need to start acting like Finch's. She tries to act like a mom but she's not. She came to our house and expects us to do everything that she says. She's antagonizing us. She is the exact opposite of a pensive person. Aunt Alexandra is trying to act like the leader of our house when she's not. I don't know whether or not Atticus agreed to this but they are having quarrels to. I can tell that Atticus loves his sister but doesn't agree with everything that she does. Aunt Alexandra and Atticus have been debating a lot about either me or Calpurnia. She doesn't believe that everyone should have the same opportunity and she looks down at Calpurnia. Calpurnia needs to look down on her. Cal has done more for us then Aunt Alexandra will ever do. Cal's more like a mom to both me and Jem. She has always been there for us and will always. Aunt Alexandra just comes and goes when she pleases and acts like out mother when he don't want her. She always has to be infallible and it bothers me so much.
Two nights ago, I thought there was a snake under my bed. I went and got Jem and made him look underneath there. If there was a snake, not a normal possibility, he didn't want it to bite him so he went and got a broom. He stuck it under the bed and almost hit Dill's head. Ya, Dill was hiding underneath my bed. He wasn't even supposed to be here. He ran away from home because he thought that his mom and new dad would be happier without him there. He took money from his moms purse, I can so imagine doing this to Aunt Alexandra, and hoped on a train and came to Maycomb. He said that he had to walk about 14 miles but will Dill one never knows. We tried to extract the real information on his journey here but it was Dill. He always telling tall tales and I'm never sure when to believe him.
Heck Tate, the towns sheriff, and a bunch of other men showed up at our door wanting to talk to Atticus. Of course, Atticus wouldn't let us go outside with him but he had to watch. Jem went into the front room and watched everything. Dill and I manned another window. They kept saying stuff about Tom Robinson. He is a black man that Atticus is defending. Tom was accused of Rape. I asked Cal what that meant and she said I had to ask Atticus. He told me it was a carnal knowledge of a female and with force. I don't know if I believe that Tom did that but why would someone emerge with false information if it involved an innocent man going to jail. I really don't get Atticus's job sometimes. Late at night, Atticus left the house with the car. He never takes the car. Jem was going after him but I said that I was going to. He knew not to fight with me so brought me and Dill with. We thought he was going to his office, but found him sitting outside of the jail. These men appeared, one of them was Mr. Walter Cunningham, and started talking to Atticus. I don't totally remember what they wanted but I know that it had something to do with Tom Robinson. I heard Tom Robinson talk for the first time that night before Atticus sent us home. He didn't say much but by the tone of him voice, he didn't seem like the person of raping type.
