" You'll make ten thousand shillings a month, be able to eat at the UN restaurants, drive one of their Land Rovers. Pick a nice bride and live pretty well here."
This was said by Valentino's assistant George
On page 503 paragraph 4
2) When I read this, I was really thinking that it would connect to how people think of America. They assume and that's what George was doing. People hear stories and want to believe only the good ones. They think that America is this wonderful place where anything can happen but Valentino realizes that once he's in America, that it's a lot harder than expected. He has been in the United States for over 5 years and still hasn't gotten the education he hoped to when he first arrived.
3) I think that I have definitely done this same thing. I believe only the good and not the truth. I realize now that I would rather know the truth to make a better decision than assume and end up being extremely disappointed.
4) Have you ever been in a situation where you had assumed and ended up being really disappointed?
" No, no. To America. My name is on the board!"
This was said by Valentino while he was in Sudan.
On page 509 paragraph 6
2) This quote goes along with the process that immigrants had to take to become citizens. The one thing that I have noticed with every story we have heard is that it takes a really long time to become a citizen and once they become a citizen its a very big deal. Valentino had gone through a lot to even be thought to make America his home. He thought that because all of the kids his age had left already that he would never make it to the United States. Once his name was on the board, he was ecstatic.
3) I don't think that I have every been in a situation like this. There have been many times where I thought that something wouldn't happen and in the end it does. There have been times where I have gotten very excited over things so in a way I can relate. I just imagine that Valentino was thrilled that he could finally start over and get away from all the war and hate.
4) Have you ever thought that something wasn't going to happen and in the end it does?
