Journal #2-
Chapters 4-7-
Perspective: Jem
This summer was a great one. Dill came back and of course, he was so fun. We played our stage games again but this summer we actually tried getting Boo Radley out of his house. We were going to send him a letter by lowering a fishing line into a loose shutter that we found; connected to the end of the fishing pole, was going to be the letter. We asked him if he would come out of his house. When we did this, Atticus caught us. I think the only reason that he caught us was because of Scout. She always tries to come with us and always complains about everything. I think that she told Atticus what we were going to do and that's why he caught us. That was one of our plans that Scout ruined.
The second one she ruined was when we went to see if anyone was actually in the house. We had heard stories that Boo Radley died but was just shoved up the chimney. We snuck around the backyard and saw Nathan Radley. Apparently he was going to shoot whoever or whatever he saw next. Scary huh?! Anyway, when we went into his yard, he came out with a gun and actually shot it. I don't know if it was to scare us but it sure did. We ran out of his backyard toward our school. There was a little opening underneath the fence in the back and that's how we escaped. When I was going under the fence, my shorts got caught and I had to take them off so we could run.
So that Atticus wouldn't find out that I went into the Radleys yard, I had to go back and get my shorts. I snuck out late in the night and woke Scout up. She said that she would go wake up Atticus if I didn't take her with me. I eventually convinced her if she would come that Atticus and Boo Radley would catch us because she was so loud. She was convinced her. I went back to get my pants and there they were, hanging on the back fence. It was like someone knew that I was going to come back for them. The stitching was really bad but it got me wondering. What if the Radleys thought it was funny that we were struggling to get them outside. I don't know if they thought it was annoying or funny but they were going along with it and I was starting to get a little suspicious.
