Lord of the Flies
Chapter 8- Gift of the Darkness
We were all sitting, waiting for the meeting to start. None of us knew the real reason for this meeting, but were standing on our tip toes waiting to figure out. Then he began to speak.
" I have called this meeting to discuss the manners of our leader, Ralph," he said, pointing at Ralph," I don't believe that he is fit to be the leader of this tribe. He has done nothing good for us and provides nothing. I, on the other hand, have provided you with food and have shown more leadership then Ralph."
All the boys stared at him amazed. Ralph had been a good leader. He had kept us from going insane and given us hope of being rescued. All that Jack had done for us was hunt and manipulate the littleuns.
" Who votes that Ralph should no longer be the leader of this tribe?"
Again, the boys stared at Jack with amazement. The boys kept their hands by their sides. Humiliated and mad, Jack sprinted into the forest, teardrops falling from his cheeks. The boys exchanged glances and then stared back at Jack. He had disappeared into the forest. When would he come back? We never knew but what if others join Jack? What will happen to the rest of us?
I think that's the question that is going through the boys head. What is going to happen when the other boys decide whose side they're on? It doesn't have to be like that, but Jack wants to be leader and is mad that no one agrees with him.
This part creeps me out because you don't get a straight out answer about what is going to happen next. There are so many things and they all depend on the choices of the boys. Ralph was chosen leader because he was the one that brought them together in the beginning and now Jack is tearing them apart again. He is used to being the leader of the Hunters, and he chooses to break apart from the little civilization the boys have going to complete savages. Jack is doing a terrible thing by making the boys choice between him and Ralph.
The thought that is running through the boys head is probably, who will provide better for my needs; do they need food or civilization more. Do they want a leader or to be a slave? Making a decision like this would be scary because you don't know what will happen to you over time. I would probably stay with Ralph just because he seems like a better leader that Jack does.
