QUESTION 1:
How did what you read today make you feel? Why?
RESPONSE 1:
In my story, Julia Jarmond is a journalist who researches about the Vel'd'Hiv' in France. This was when the Jews were taken from their homes and forced to live in horrible conditions. They were then sent to camps which we know today as concentration camps. Julia stumbles along information that ties back to her family. Along with this, Julia faces pregnancy, a husband in an affair and a little girl who won't leave her mind.
Julia faces a lot of hard things during this period of her life. She is going to have a baby and because of it, her husband wants nothing to do with her. She has had many miscarriages and is so thrilled when she hears she's pregnant. Then she finds out her husband has been having an affair throughout their whole marriage which makes her world fall down even farther. The little girl Sarah, was a victim of the Vel'd'Hiv' and a big part of her article. Julia also faces the horrible stories when she goes looking for Sarah's story. She tracks down everyone that has anything to do with Sarah; brothers, sons, grandchildren; to only find out that Sarah had died a year before.
Julia can't take any more drama so she moves back to the United States with her daughters. I think this was a very smart idea on Julia's part. She couldn't take it anymore and needed to start fresh. American did that for her. She started a new life with her children, didn't have to worry about he cheating ex husband and could move on. Start a new career, find new love, and remember that Sarah will always be a part of her.
QUESTION 2:
What do you think about a particular character's actions? Was he/she right or wrong to do that?
RESPONSE 2
I think that Julia made a very smart decision moving back to the United States. She was leaving all of her drama behind and could start clean. She really needed that. It might be hard for her daughters though. Since her ex husband still lives in France, her daughters need to go back and see him. I don't really see any problem with that unless they miss living with their dad. I think Julia moving to the states, not only denifited her but also her husband. He also could start over too. It was a good move for everyone.
